The best motorhome routes in the mountains of Romania

1. Bucegi Mountains

The most accessible massif near Bucharest. Distance from Bucharest: ~140 km. Park at Bușteni or Sinaia, from where you have direct access to mountain huts and trails. Poiana Stânii is an excellent spot for off-camping in the Bușteni area.

2. Retezat Mountains

The wildest national park in Romania. Access is via DN68 through Hațeg, with the starting point being the village of Câmpu lui Neag. The area offers stunning scenery and excellent off-camping opportunities.

3. Apuseni Mountains

Caves, sinkholes, traditional villages and spectacular trails. The Padis area is a favourite among motorhome travellers — Cetáțile Ponorului, Scárișoara Cave, Cheile Galbenei. The forest road to Padis is accessible with our motorhomes (check road conditions before departure).

4. Bicaz Gorge and Red Lake

A spectacular route in the heart of the Eastern Carpathians. Bicaz Gorge is among the most impressive in the country, and Red Lake — with the fir tree stumps rising out of the water — is a unique sight. Quality campsites in the area.

Tips for off-camping in the mountains by motorhome

Off-camping means camping outside designated campsites — on a mountain plateau, beside a spring, at the edge of a glacial lake. Our motorhomes are specially equipped for this:

• Solar panel: provides power for 3–4 days without connecting to the grid
• Fresh water tank: sufficient for 2–3 days without a campsite station
• LPG cylinder: for independent cooking and heating
• Eco toilet: no dependence on campsite facilities

What to prepare before heading to the mountains by motorhome

• Check the weather forecast — mountain weather changes quickly
• Plan your route and save offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me)
• Stock up on food and water for a minimum of 3 days
• Bring appropriate hiking gear (boots, rain jackets)
• Check your fuel level — few stations in remote areas
• Let someone know your route if travelling in areas without signal

How many kilometres do you cover per day in the mountains by motorhome?

We recommend a maximum of 200–250 km per day on mountain roads — winding roads and reduced speeds take more time than you might expect. Our motorhomes include 300 km/day on average, calculated over the total rental days, so you have flexibility.
