Motorhome in the Danube DeltaThe Wildest Corner of Romania

📅 Updated 2026 · ⏱ 6 min read · ✍️ Romanian Campers
The Danube Delta is one of the most spectacular destinations in Europe — a world apart, with canals, reed beds, pelicans and unforgettable sunsets. And it is perfect for a motorhome holiday. You enter the delta from Tulcea or Murighiol, park your camper and explore by boat or on foot.

How to reach the Danube Delta by camper

The Danube Delta cannot be crossed by car — most of it is accessible only by boat. But the motorhome base camp can be one of the towns on the edge of the delta:
  • Tulcea — the main gateway to the delta. Parking, facilities, and the starting point for boats to Sulina or Sf. Gheorghe
  • Murighiol — a quiet village on the Sf. Gheorghe branch, excellent for fishing and birdwatching
  • Crișan — accessible by ferry from Tulcea, a central area of the delta
  • Jurilovca & Lacul Razim — the Razim-Sinoe lagoon, more accessible by car, stunning scenery
Distances from Bucharest:
  • Bucharest → Tulcea: ~280 km, ~3h 30min
  • Bucharest → Murighiol: ~310 km, ~4h
  • Bucharest → Jurilovca: ~270 km, ~3h

Motorhome camping spots near the Delta

Camping Murighiol

One of the best campsites in the delta area. Right on the waterfront, with good facilities for motorhomes — electricity, water, toilets. From here you can hire boats for excursions into the delta.

Lake Razim Area

Ideal for legal off-camping. Open areas on the lake shore where you can park your motorhome without restrictions (respecting environmental protection rules). The sunsets over Razim are unforgettable.

Guest houses with motorhome parking

Many guesthouses in Murighiol, Maliuc and Crișan have adapted their spaces for motorhomes — you can park, hook up to electricity and use the guesthouse facilities. An excellent option if you want maximum comfort.

What to do in the Danube Delta with your motorhome as a base

  • Boat trips — navigate secondary canals, visit Sulina (the only town in the Delta), observe the pelican colonies
  • Fishing — your motorhome is equipped with a large fridge for the day's catch. Fishing for catfish, carp, pike
  • Birdwatching — the Delta is home to over 300 bird species, including the Dalmatian pelican — the largest colony in Europe
  • The beaches of Sulina and Sf. Gheorghe — the wildest beaches in Romania, accessible by boat
  • Cycling — the dykes around Tulcea and Murighiol are perfect for cycling (bike rack for 3–4 bicycles included with our motorhomes)

Special tips for the Danube Delta

⚠️ Mosquitoes! The Danube Delta has a substantial mosquito population, especially in June–July. Bring insect repellent spray, mosquito nets for windows and long-sleeved clothing for evenings outdoors.
  • Best time to visit: April–May (no heat, few mosquitoes) and September–October (bird migration)
  • Book boat trips in advance during peak season
  • Bring enough supplies — shops in the delta are scarce and expensive
  • Fuel: fill up in Tulcea before heading into the delta
