Motorhome Trip to Serbia from Romania
Route, Documents, the Danube and Campsites — 2026 Guide

↺ Updated 2026 · ⏱ 8 min read · ✍️ Romanian Campers

Serbia is the underrated neighbour: a few hours from the border you'll find lively cities, a genuinely spectacular Danube gorge and people who are extremely welcoming to visitors. Being outside the European Union, it has a few particular rules, but it remains one of the most relaxed and affordable destinations for a motorhome holiday. Here's everything you need to know to set off prepared.

The route from Romania to Serbia

The most common route runs through the west of the country: from Bucharest towards Timișoara, then the border at Moravița–Vatin, from where Belgrade is about an hour and a half away. Alternatively, for the southern Danube, you can enter via the crossings near the Iron Gates. The main destinations:

  • Belgrade — the vibrant capital, with the Kalemegdan fortress at the confluence of the Sava and the Danube.
  • Novi Sad — the city of the Petrovaradin fortress (host of the EXIT festival), less than an hour from Belgrade.
  • The Danube Gorge / Djerdap (the Serbian side of the "Cauldrons") — dramatic scenery, the Golubac fortress, one of the most beautiful drives in the region.
  • Zlatibor and Drvengrad — mountains, traditional villages and Kusturica's village, in the south-west.

Documents and tolls (note — Serbia is NOT in the EU)

  • Papers — for tourism, an ID card is enough for short stays; a passport is a safe alternative.
  • The Green Card (insurance) — essential: Romanian motor insurance does not automatically cover Serbia. Ask your insurer for a Green Card valid for Serbia before you leave.
  • Road tolls — Serbia has no vignette but motorway tolls at barriers (you pay for the section driven, by card or cash).
  • Currency — the Serbian dinar (RSD). Keep some cash; euros are easy to exchange.

Campsites and overnight stops

The campsite network is more modest than in Greece, but there are good options around Belgrade, at Novi Sad and in the mountain tourist areas. Along the Danube and in the mountains you'll find guesthouses and grounds that welcome motorhomes. As everywhere, check recent reviews on Park4night and Campercontact and avoid wild camping in protected areas.

Why Serbia is worth it by motorhome

  • Close and cheap — fuel, food and lodging at friendly prices.
  • A warm welcome — visitors are well received, and you'll manage with English in the cities.
  • Variety — cities, a spectacular Danube and mountains, all within short distances.
  • Less touristy — authentic, without the crowds of the classic destinations.

When to go

Serbia is a long-season destination: spring and autumn are ideal for the cities and the Danube (pleasant temperatures), and summer for festivals and the mountains. The Danube Gorge is gorgeous in any warm season.
