The route from Romania to Hungary
The fastest route runs through the west: from Bucharest towards Arad, then the border at Nădlac, straight onto the motorway into Hungary. From here:
- Budapest — about 3 hours from the border, the "Pearl of the Danube", with the Parliament, the Fisherman's Bastion and the Széchenyi baths.
- Lake Balaton — Hungarians' favourite holiday destination, with dozens of campsites right on the water's edge; a paradise for motorhomes.
- Hévíz — the largest natural warm thermal lake in Europe, near Balaton.
- Eger and Szeged — beautiful cities, with thermal baths and historic centres.
Documents and the electronic vignette
- Papers — Hungary is in the EU: ID card, driving licence, vehicle registration and EU-valid motor insurance. No special formalities.
- The electronic vignette (e-matrica) — mandatory on Hungarian motorways. Buy it online or at petrol stations, by vehicle category. A motorhome under 3,500 kg generally falls into the car category (D1) — check the exact weight when buying.
- Currency — the Hungarian forint (HUF). Cards are accepted almost everywhere.
Campsites in Hungary
Hungary has a very developed camping culture, especially around Lake Balaton, where you'll find large campsites with their own beach, power, water, waste disposal and every facility. Budapest also has good campsites on the edge of the city, from which you easily reach the centre by public transport. Book ahead in summer, at peak season.

When to go
