The route from Bucharest to Greece

The simplest route runs through Bulgaria. From Bucharest you cross the Danube at Giurgiu–Ruse, drive across Bulgaria on the motorway (via Veliko Tarnovo heading south) and enter Greece at the Kulata–Promachonas crossing. From here, northern Greece is within easy reach:

• Halkidiki (Kassandra and Sithonia) — the favourite spot for Romanians with a motorhome, about 700 km from Bucharest (a day's drive).
• Thassos — the green island, a short ferry from Keramoti.
• The Olympic Riviera and Pieria — long beaches at the foot of Mount Olympus.
• Kavala and Nea Peramos — excellent stops on the way east.

For southern Greece (Pelion, Evia, the Peloponnese) you add a few hours, but the roads are good almost everywhere.

Documents and road tolls

• Papers — ID card or passport, driving licence, vehicle registration and your motor insurance (valid in the EU; check the Green Card to be safe).
• Bulgaria — you need an electronic vignette (e-vignette), which you buy online before entering Bulgarian roads.
• Greece — no vignette, but motorway tolls (diódia) paid per section at toll stations (cash or card). A motorhome usually falls into a higher category than a small car.
• LPG — if the motorhome has an LPG system, stations are available in both Bulgaria and Greece.

Ferries to the islands

Many islands in northern Greece are a short ferry away, and the motorhome boards without any trouble:

• Thassos — ferry from Keramoti (to Limenas) or from Kavala (to Skala Prinos), a 40–75 minute crossing, frequent departures.
• Evia — connected to the mainland by bridge, but also with short ferries.
• Fare — for motorhomes you pay by vehicle length. Book ahead in July–August, when crossings get busy.

Campsites in Greece

Greece has a dense network of well-equipped campsites, many right on the beach, with pine shade, power, water, hot showers and tavernas. It's the ideal solution, especially because in Greece wild camping is officially banned and fines are issued, particularly on popular beaches. Choose a campsite and enjoy the sea without worry.

How much a motorhome holiday in Greece costs

As a guide for 2026, for a return trip from Bucharest:

• Fuel — the biggest expense; depends on consumption and how many km you drive on site.
• Tolls — Bulgaria vignette + Greek motorway tolls (a few tens of euros each way).
• Camping — roughly €20–35/night for a motorhome + 2 people + power.
• Ferry (optional, for islands) — depending on the length of the motorhome.

Even so, a motorhome holiday remains significantly cheaper than hotel + flights + a rental car, especially for families.

When to go
