The route from Bucharest: how close Bulgaria really is

You cross the Danube on the Giurgiu–Ruse bridge and you're already in Bulgaria. From here, depending on your destination:

• The coast (Black Sea) — Sozopol, Sinemorets, Sunny Beach, Nessebar: about 4–5 hours from Bucharest via Ruse–Varna/Burgas.
• Veliko Tarnovo — the former medieval capital, less than 3 hours away, a gorgeous stop on the way south.
• The Rila and Pirin Mountains — for nature and hiking (the Seven Rila Lakes, Bansko), in the south-west.
• Plovdiv — one of the oldest cities in Europe, with a charming old town.

Documents and the vignette

• Papers — ID card or passport, driving licence, vehicle registration and motor insurance (valid in the EU).
• The electronic vignette — mandatory on Bulgarian national roads and motorways. Buy it online (e-vignette) or at petrol stations before you get on the road. There's also a bridge toll at Giurgiu–Ruse.
• Currency — the Bulgarian lev (BGN). Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but keep some cash for markets and small campsites.

Campsites and overnight stops

On the Bulgarian coast there are well-known campsites, many right by the beach, especially around Sozopol (Camping Gradina, Kavatsi) and Arapya to the south. Compared with Greece, wild camping is a little more tolerated out of season, but it remains officially restricted — the safest bet is a campsite or a stop verified on Park4night. Respect the protected areas along the coast and leave your spot clean.
