Skiing and Winter Holidays by Motorhome
Resorts, Routes and How to Stay Warm — 2026 Guide
Winter doesn't mean the motorhome stays in the garage — quite the opposite. With a well-equipped motorhome and onboard heating, you have a cabin on wheels right at the foot of the slope: you wake up with the piste in front of you, make a hot coffee and step straight onto the snow in your ski boots. In this guide we show you the best ski resorts you can reach by motorhome, how to stay warm in freezing weather and what to watch for when driving in winter.
Why go skiing by motorhome
- Sleep at the foot of the slope — no daily drive to your accommodation, no lugging your gear. You're first on the chairlift in the morning.
- Lower cost — mountain accommodation in ski season is expensive; a motorhome covers your transport and lodging in one.
- Flexibility — if the snow is better at another resort, you move your home to follow it.
- Comfort — you come off the slope into a warm space with a kitchen and a bed, not a cold car park.
Ski resorts you can reach by motorhome
- Poiana Brașov — the best known, with large car parks at the foot of the slopes and guesthouses that welcome motorhomes nearby.
- Sinaia and Predeal — on the Prahova Valley, ~2 hours from Bucharest, with easy access and plenty of facilities.
- Straja (Lupeni) — long pistes in the Jiu Valley, a relaxed atmosphere, ideal for families.
- Rânca (Transalpina) — a mountain resort with parking at the base; the high road closes in winter, but the ski area stays accessible.
- Arena Platoș – Păltiniș (Sibiu) — good for beginners and families.
Always check in advance whether the car park at the foot of the slope allows overnight stays with a motorhome — see our guide to where you can camp and park legally.
How to stay warm in freezing weather
A modern motorhome is built to keep you comfortable even at sub-zero temperatures:
- Truma heating (gas or diesel) keeps the interior warm all night. Make sure your gas bottle is full — consumption rises in winter.
- Insulation — modern models have insulated walls; draw the thermal blinds over the windows to keep the heat in.
- Protect the water — in freezing weather, tanks and pipes can freeze. Empty the waste water in the evening and, if you're staying a while, keep the heating on at a minimum. Some "winterised" motorhomes have insulated/heated tanks.
- Ventilate briefly — condensation builds up fast in winter; open a window for a few minutes in the morning.
Driving on snow and ice
- Winter tyres — mandatory on snow/ice-covered roads in Romania. Confirm with the rental company that the motorhome is equipped.
- Chains — keep a set on board for the steep sections up to the resorts.
- Drive smoothly — a motorhome is heavier and taller; brake early, use engine braking on descents and avoid sudden manoeuvres.
- Set off with a full tank — both fuel and gas.
Campsites open in winter
Not all campsites operate in the cold season, but in the popular mountain areas (Brașov, the Prahova Valley) there are campsites and guesthouses with motorhome spots open all year, with 230V power — essential in winter to run the heating without draining the battery. Book ahead on ski and holiday weekends.
Book your winter holiday with Romanian Campers
Romanian Campers motorhomes are equipped for the cold season: Truma heating, good insulation, a hot-water boiler and an automatic gearbox, which is safer on snowy roads. All are generally driven on a category B licence. Want relaxation rather than adrenaline? Combine skiing with a thermal baths tour. Starting from the capital? See our motorhome rental in Bucharest.
